What to do immediately
Blot fresh red wine with a dry white towel. Lift the towel, choose a clean area and repeat without grinding the stain into the surface. Keep people and pets away from the wet spot. Do not add white wine, salt or hot water in the hope of cancelling the colour. An upholstery seat and a handwoven rug can look similar while requiring very different care.
Upholstery, wool and delicate rugs are different
On a sofa, locate the cleaning code and the manufacturer’s instructions before applying a liquid. On a rug, identify the fibre, backing, dyes and care advice. Wool, silk, viscose and decorative fringes deserve particular caution; a product for a synthetic carpet is not automatically suitable. Sunbrella publishes cleaning instructions for its own fabric, including wine, but that guidance must not be applied to every red stain or textile.
A restrained sequence
The aim of first aid is to collect the spill and preserve the material for assessment. If a care label is missing, stay with dry blotting and contact a professional before experimenting.
- Collect excess wine with a white absorbent towel, working inwards from the spill boundary.
- Check the care information and identify whether liquid has reached a cushion, rug backing or the floor beneath.
- Only if approved, test the recommended treatment in a concealed spot and check again after drying.
- Use the maker’s small-scale treatment and residue-removal instructions. Allow full air drying.
Why repeated home treatments can backfire
Red wine may leave a persistent coloured mark even after the original liquid has been absorbed. Scrubbing can alter a fabric’s surface; excessive moisture can enlarge a ring or travel into layers beneath. Avoid bleach, peroxide, strong detergent and heat unless the item’s manufacturer specifically authorizes a relevant professional process. Stop if a rug’s dye appears on the towel. For a valuable rug, preserving its colours and structure matters more than an immediate cosmetic change.
Request an assessment in Ottawa or Gatineau
For IN Touch Clean enquiries, include a photograph of the stain and the entire item, fibre details if known, spill timing and previous treatments. Homes in Ottawa and Gatineau often contain a mix of synthetic seating and delicate rugs, so give information about each item separately. Ask about the likely outcome before cleaning begins. An aged stain or dye change may need specialist attention and cannot be guaranteed to disappear.
