The safest first decision
For ink or transferred clothing dye on leather, preserve the finish before trying to erase the mark. If a fresh droplet is still on the surface, gently lift it with a dry white cloth without spreading it. Photograph the stain and locate the manufacturer’s care information. Do not try an internet solvent recipe: a treatment that fades ink can also remove colour or change the sheen of the surrounding leather.
Leather is not one uniform material
Pigmented or protected leather, aniline leather, semi-aniline, suede and nubuck have different surfaces. The furniture label and the maker’s description are more useful than guessing from colour or softness. Furniture Clinic distinguishes the use of its ink treatments on absorbent leathers, while Stressless recommends its tested care products for its furniture. A dedicated leather cleaner is not automatically an ink remover, and a product for coated leather is not universal.
How to prepare for a useful assessment
You can gather valuable information without performing a risky spot treatment. Describe the pen or clothing involved and whether the mark is new.
- Photograph the whole seat, the stain and any care label in natural light.
- Note the leather name or finish if supplied by the furniture maker.
- List every product already applied, including wipes, conditioner and household cleaners.
- Use only a treatment explicitly compatible with that finish and approved by the maker; if uncertain, request professional assessment first.
Avoid these shortcuts
Do not use rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover, hairspray, bleach, abrasive pads or a magic eraser as a default ink treatment. Do not scrub or heat the mark. A pale sofa can show denim transfer that is difficult to distinguish from finish damage after aggressive cleaning. Stop if the cloth picks up the sofa’s colour or the area becomes tacky, dull or glossy. Old absorbed ink may require restoration rather than further cleaning.
Leather care enquiries in Ottawa–Gatineau
Send IN Touch Clean photographs and the care information for your leather sofa or chair in Ottawa or Gatineau. Explain whether the stain is ink, denim or another pigment and how long it has been present. The next step depends on the finish and condition; cleaning, colour repair and specialist restoration are separate processes. We can discuss the appropriate assessment without promising complete removal. Keeping pens and dark damp clothing away from light leather is a simple way to reduce future incidents.
