Grease and Oil Stains on a Sofa: Safe First Steps

Lift excess grease without spreading it, check the care label, and avoid improvised degreasers on upholstery.

Start by identifying the spill

Grease on a sofa might come from cooking oil, butter, cosmetics or repeated contact with skin. Lift loose food carefully using a blunt edge, then blot free oil with a white cloth. Do not scrape into the weave. Record the source if you know it: an oily makeup mark may also contain pigment, while a greasy headrest may cover a much larger area than the darkest patch.

Why water alone may not be enough

Sunbrella distinguishes oily spills from water-based spills in its own care guidance. This is a useful reminder to identify the residue before treatment, not permission to use its cleaners on other fabrics. Consult the sofa label and the brand’s instructions. W, S, WS and X describe different permitted cleaning categories. A household kitchen degreaser, dishwashing mixture or solvent is not automatically appropriate for a seat cushion.

A controlled approach

Keep the initial response small. An unknown fabric or absent label is a reason to stop at careful absorption and arrange assessment.

  1. Lift solids and absorb loose oil without rubbing it over a wider area.
  2. Photograph the mark and locate the fabric name and care instructions.
  3. Test only a manufacturer-approved treatment in a hidden area; let it dry and inspect for colour or texture change.
  4. Apply as directed, remove residue using the specified method, and let the item dry fully before sitting on it.

What to avoid on a valuable sofa

Do not assume that baking soda, cornstarch or a strong degreaser is safe for every weave. Powder may lodge in textured upholstery; excess detergent may leave a different mark from the original spill. Avoid steam, vigorous brushing, bleach and unapproved solvents. If the upholstery is leather, use leather-specific instructions rather than a fabric procedure. A faded or darkened headrest may involve finish wear as well as soil, so cleaning and restoration are different questions.

Professional stain assessment in Ottawa–Gatineau

Send IN Touch Clean a close-up and a wider view, along with the sofa label and the approximate age of the stain. In Ottawa or Gatineau, describe whether the problem is a single recent spill or accumulated oil on an armrest or headrest. This allows a more useful conversation about cleaning the full affected panel. Some oily marks improve substantially; absorbed pigment or material damage may remain. Agree on realistic expectations before treatment.
